# What to do with bulky waste in the Capitanata

A sagging sofa, a mattress, three broken chairs and a kitchen cabinet. These are the things that sit in the middle of the corridor for weeks because nobody knows where to put them. There's more than one way, and it's worth knowing which one suits your case before loading anything into the car.

The municipal service

Almost all municipalities in the Foggia province offer two options: the recycling centre where you bring things yourself, and home collection by appointment. The collection is usually free up to a certain number of items.

It has two practical limits. The first is time: you book and wait for the assigned day, which can be two or three weeks away. The second is that you almost always have to bring the stuff to street level yourself, the evening before or in the morning at the indicated time.

If you have a sofa on the third floor with no lift, the municipality's free service doesn't solve your main problem, which is getting it down.

The rules change from municipality to municipality. Foggia, Manfredonia, San Severo, Cerignola and Lucera have different numbers, times and limits, and they change over time. Before booking, check your municipality's website or call the environment office.

Private pickup

You pay, and in return you buy two things: time and stairs. We arrive at the agreed time, dismantle if needed, carry things down ourselves, and the space is left clean.

It pays off in three cases. When the items are many and the municipality's limit isn't enough. When there's a deadline, for example handing over the keys. And when the stuff is on upper floors or in a cellar with a narrow staircase.

It also pays when along with the bulky items there are appliances or waste that the municipal collection won't take with the same booking, so everything happens in one run.

Before throwing, check if something still has value

A lot of what ends up as bulky waste isn't rubbish. Wooden furniture, tools, pictures, bicycles, working small appliances: if they're in decent condition, they can be resold or given away.

This part isn't just environmental common sense, it's an advantage on the bill: what has value we pick up and deduct from the quote, instead of paying for its disposal. Fewer items to tip, lower costs.

If you don't want to sell, in the province there are parishes and associations that take furniture and clothes in good condition. Worth a phone call before considering everything garbage.

What not to do

Leaving the mattress next to the bins or at the edge of a country road towards Ordona or Stornara is the worst choice. It's a fine, and not a symbolic one.

And it's also something that stays there. An abandoned sofa on a provincial road sits there for months, and the people who pass by and look at it are the same ones who live there. The cost of a proper disposal is always lower than that.
