"Free pickup" is a phrase you read often, and it's not always a scam. Sometimes it's true, sometimes it's only half true. The difference comes down to one thing: what the item you're giving away is worth compared to what it costs to dispose of.
When free works
An appliance has value if it contains recoverable metal or if it still works. An old but intact washing machine, a gas cooker, an oven, a water heater: they're full of iron and steel, and that material has a price per kilo.
If you're giving away two or three items like that, a free pickup makes sense for both sides. Whoever comes to take them recovers the value of the material, and you get rid of heavy stuff without carrying it down the stairs.
It also works when the pickup is attached to a bigger job. If we're already emptying a cellar or doing a small move in Foggia, the extra fridge doesn't change the quote.
When free doesn't work
The fridge and the air conditioner are the two cases where free almost never covers everything. They contain refrigerant gases that must be recovered by an authorised operator, and that step has a fixed cost that doesn't depend on how nice you are.
Same for old cathode-ray televisions, monitors, broken small appliances and everything that falls under WEEE. These are wastes that must be handed to a facility with paperwork, not just loaded up and driven away.
If someone tells you they'll take a fridge, an air conditioner and three televisions away for free, one of two things is true: either they're losing money, or that stuff won't end up where it should.
Questions to ask before anything gets loaded
Ask where the material goes. A serious answer is the name of a facility or a recycling centre, not "we'll take care of it".
Ask if you get paperwork. For household WEEE, traceability matters, and anyone working legally has no problem leaving you a document.
Ask the price before the item goes on the van. The moment to discuss the figure is on the landing, not after the washing machine is already loaded.

The pickup is at your home: we carry things down ourselves, even from upper floors, even without a lift. We work in Foggia and its province, the Capitanata area and the Gargano coast, and for single items we try to group runs in the same area, so it costs less for everyone.
If the item still works and it makes sense to put it back into circulation, it ends up on our used-goods board instead of in a landfill. It's the best outcome for everyone: you get rid of it, someone else uses it.
